Well, the look of the cake, it ain’t
It ain’t always the taste
My ex girl, she had such a beautiful face
I wanted love but not for myself
But for the girl so she could
So she could love herself
-Black Keys
So much good music the next three days. Tonight I'm seeing the Black Keys, tomorrow night Bonnie Prince Billy, and this weekend is the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Kind of beside myself. There is not much else like dancing in a crowd of people to cure one's ills. Life has a way of giving you the things you need most when you need them most, and I'm taking the inspiration wherever I can find it-or wherever it finds me.
I spent much of the summer doing yoga and in small waves teaching people how to surf: how to catch waves, stand up and hopefully find enough joy in each moment of success and defeat to keep with it. Learning how to surf is one of my biggest accomplishments in life. It didn't come easy for me, and I learned during a time when there was little else I was able to commit myself to. In the end, it is not about how much of a natural we are, it's our ability to put aside our fear of failure to want something enough to try for it with our whole heart, every ounce of our being and fail repeatedly in the process. Eventually the biggest success is the process it took to get there, and the way it feels to ride down the face of a wave. All of a sudden, that joy is so much bigger than any of the struggle it took along the way.
